Sometimes it really does pay to be in Spain when the UK is sizzling at 30+ degrees. Thankfully, we had air conditioning on our side – small victories. A few members were still looking a touch travel-weary after the Captain’s Away Trip to Vera, Almería, the weekend before. Practice rounds for today? Let’s just say the rumour mill was working overtime.
The last time we played here it was New Year’s Eve – how on earth are we already closing in on June? There wasn’t a gilet or jacket to be seen this time, just plenty of water, suncream, and the occasional search for a bit of shade.
Villamartín remains a firm favourite with the group, and we also heard the good news that there has been an overwhelming vote to redevelop the course – a very sensible result indeed. The plans sound fantastic. José, Fran, and the rest of the team were, as always, helpful, friendly, and efficient, while the greenkeepers clearly deserve a round of applause too. The greens were in very good condition and rolling beautifully.
A total of 44 golfers teed it up, starting on the ever-dodgy 10th hole. It always feels slightly strange setting off there instead of the traditional 1st, but everyone coped admirably.
There were some cracking scores out there, and the winners lined up as follows:
Prix d'or: Darren Hancock (49 pts and, just to make the day even sweeter, beat his son Samuel in the Singles Knockout 3&1)
un Prix d'argent : John Simmons (38 pts)
de bronze: Bill Crichton (41 pts and the best score of the day)
There were two “Twos” on the day, courtesy of Johan Lager and John Batterby. Nearest the Pin honours went to Graeme Forbes (6th), Barry Roehrig (9th), Johan Lager (13th) et Mike Stott (17th). The not-so-best player prize, the McBride Bottle, found its way to Roddy Duncan – who may point to work commitments as mitigation – while Lee Eastman landed the football card with Leeds. Well done all.
Next week we head north to Font del Llop to find out whether the wolves really are at the watering hole – or whether that is just another golfing myth. Either way, it should be another good one.
